The best class at Pratt Institute? ART OF SCENT, taught by the amazing professor @alexiskarlfilms ! 👃

I learned so much from Alexis, both during my undergrad years and later while TAing for her Art of Scent class.

Scent has an incredible ability to bring back memories and emotions, which is why I don’t see it as something separate from my work, but as another artistic material within it.

So grateful for everything Alexis taught me and for introducing me to a medium that continues to find its way into my practice. :)

Very honored and excited to see Untouchable Duality featured as the main image for the upcoming Sculptors Guild exhibition at Paul Larsen Gallery. 🤩

Untouchable Duality

Untouchable Duality presents two LEGO-like blocks that share the same visual language while embodying opposite material realities.

The white block is hand-carved from alabaster, yet its rounded edges, softened form, and finger-like impressions give it a distinctly clay-like appearance, as though it had been pressed and shaped by hand. Despite appearing soft and pliable, it is cold, heavy, and unyielding.

In contrast, the colorful silicone block appears crisp, rigid, and toy-like, but bends and collapses under pressure.

Together, the two forms reverse the relationship between appearance and physical sensation. The object that looks soft is hard, while the object that looks hard is soft.

Both blocks are designed to invite touch, yet the conventions of the gallery prevent viewers from physically confirming their expectations. The work playfully examines how quickly vision creates assumptions about material while withholding the tactile experience needed to prove them right or wrong.

I’m deeply honored to exhibit my graduation sculpture alongside the remarkable members of the @sculptorsguild , as the first recipient of the Guild’s scholarship.
It truly feels like such a blessing, and I’m so thankful to God for this opportunity.
I’ll be around during the opening night, and I really hope to see some familiar faces there!

5.7: Honoring the Sculptors Guild Legacy at the Smithsonian
This year's show, titled "5.7," takes its name from the 5.7 linear feet of archival microfilm about the Sculptors Guild housed at the Smithsonian Museum. These priceless documents chronicle the Guild’s vibrant history from its founding in 1937 through 1979, offering a rich glimpse into the evolution of American sculpture during that period.

As the curator for both last year’s and this year’s exhibitions, I am dedicated to deepening the connection between the Guild’s past and present. By adding new materials to the Smithsonian archives, we continue to preserve and celebrate the legacy of the Sculptors Guild. This archival journey not only honors the artists who shaped the medium but also inspires new generations of sculptors and art lovers alike.

Through "5.7," visitors are invited to explore a unique chapter of art history, bridging the past with the ongoing creative spirit of the Guild today.
